Miscellaneous records of the Philadelphia Arcade Association. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence and minutes of the board meetings of the Philadelphia Arcade Association which was formed in 1825 to erect the building. Other records incldue the articles of subscription; a list of subscribers and members of the Board; copies of share certificates; and lists of building committee members and of members of other committees.

The Philadelphia Arcade, a former historic site, was designed by Peter A. Browne and built in 1826/1827. The Philadelphia Arcade Association, formed by Browne in 1825, erected the building, John Redman Coxe served as President of the association initially. It was the first building arcade of its kind in the United States and was an imitation of such buildings in Europe. The Arcade was a three-story white marble building. John Redman Coxe was born in Trenton, New Jersey, the son of Daniel and Sarah Redman Coxe, and the grandson of Philadelphia physician John Redman. Coxe received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1794 and after additional study in Europe, established his practice in Philadelphia. He also taught at the University of Pennsylvania, wrote on medical topics, and edited medical journals and books. He was married to Sarah Cox; they had ten children.
